Had a journal entry come across my desk this week that, on the surface looked routine misc income adjustment tied to some vendor rebates but the backup didn't match, and the more I looked, the more it pointed to a pattern of small inconsistencies going back a few quarters. Nothing fraudulent, just sloppy tracking and a few entries that got duplicated across departments. It reminded me how journal entries aren't just debits and credits, they're the paper trail of how an organization thinks, communicates (or doesn't), and sometimes covers its tracks without even realizing it. One wrong entry can ripple into the next period, or worse, give leadership a completely false sense of performance.
This one led to a couple conversations we probably should've had months ago.
